Today’s Bible reading: Matthew Chapter 2
Key Verse: Matthew 2:13
“When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
History tells us that King Herod was a cruel leader who was power hungry and willing to kill anyone who threatened his reign. So when a group of Magi start proclaiming that the Messiah had been born bad ole King Herod gets a little uncomfortable. First he tries to trick the Magi into telling him the location of Jesus by saying that he wants to go worship him. But God sends an angel to warn the Magi of Herod’s plot and they keep Jesus’ location a secret!
“When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.” v.16
God also warns Joseph in a dream and he takes Jesus to safety in Egypt until King Herod’s death. “When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” v.13
Even as a new born babe we can see God’s hand in Jesus’ story protecting him and leading him from the very beginning. Just as God’s hand is in our story leading and protecting us. We only have to be still and listen for His voice.
An angel of the Lord might not appear in our dreams like it did for Joseph and the Magi , although if God wanted that to happen then it totally could, but God may close a door in our lives in order to protect us from what is behind it.
When God closes a door or says “no” to something we have been praying for it is because God has our best interest in mind. Only He knows what is behind that door , only God knows what the future holds. Sometimes we just have to patiently wait on His timing and listen for His voice. But don’t forget when God closes a door He usually opens a window! So friends, listen for that still small voice, watch for that hand that is always protecting you, and look for that window!
